The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce a successful Missouri State Penitentiary 2021 tour season, with over 25,000 visitors.

Total revenue from the tours exceeded $550,000. MSP visitors made a $2.8 million economic impact on Jefferson City during 2021, whether they stayed at a hotel, ate at a restaurant, or visited another attraction. Large film groups, including Ghost Hunters and Destination Fear, generated revenue of nearly $65,000.

The Missouri State Penitentiary Museum saw nearly 4,300 individuals walking through its doors. The new tour season will feature the return of the historic Housing Unit 4, commonly known as A-Hall. Built in the late 1860s to house Civil War criminals, Housing Unit 4 is the oldest existing housing unit on the Missouri State Penitentiary property.

The Missouri State Penitentiary opened its doors in 1836 and at its peak was the largest operating prison in the United States. Tours will resume on March 2, 2022.
