Four months after temporarily closing due to tornado damage, the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) tours will once again resume.

Visitors can soon return to the historic attraction, as MSP will offer modified 2-hour history and 2-hour ghost tours starting on October 1 and running through November 30.

The modified tours will include access to Housing Units 1, 3 and the gas chamber. Tourists will still have an opportunity to learn about Housing Unit 4’s history but are currently unable to enter the building until further repairs are made.

“The Missouri State Penitentiary is an iconic structure to Jefferson City and we are thrilled to see it re-open to visitors,” says Mayor Carrie Tergin. “The historic site is vital to our city’s economy, bringing in over 2.5 million dollars in economic attendee expenditures in 2018.”

For a complete look at the tour schedule or to purchase tickets, individuals should visit MissouriPenTours.com.

Net profit from ticket and merchandise sales goes back into the preservation of the MSP and tour enhancement.

The Missouri State Penitentiary opened its doors in 1836 and at its peak was the largest operating prison in the United States. The prison is notably famous for housing inmates such as professional boxer Sonny Liston and notorious outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd. The prison was decommissioned in 2004 and opened for tours in 2009.
