Meeting Professionals International (MPI) is dedicated to developing strong event planners, advancing the reputation of meetings and helping businesses understand the ROI events have to offer. MPI understands the reality of event coordination – the strict demands, high expectations, insurmountable details and long hours. Through educating members, building leadership skills and growing relationships, MPI is elevating the status and competency of the global meeting and event industry.
The cornerstone of MPI membership is building relationships. MPI does this on a local level by offering membership to planners and suppliers. This opens the dialogue between the groups, exposing planners to new ideas and helping suppliers better meet the needs of the industry. On an international level, MPI hosts educational conferences and events around the world, allowing members to build global relationships as they share their experiences and best practices.
Member education is a vital function of MPI. The organization offers a comprehensive set of online resources for members through MPIWeb.org, including breaking news, cutting-edge research, career resource information and forums for discussing industry issues. Local chapters host monthly meetings focused on pertinent industry subjects and many also offer longer, topic-specific seminars.
Elevating the field means setting the bar for industry professionals and establishing universal standards. MPI does this through two certification programs – Global Certification in Meeting Management (CMM) and the Certified Meeting Professional Program (CMP). MPI supports the CMP program created by the Convention Industry Council, and many chapters host study groups. The CMM program was created by MPI as an educational program allowing members with a passion for the field to take their careers to the next level.
MPI began in 1972 with 159 members in Dallas, Texas. Today, there are more than 22,000 members from a variety of backgrounds. More than 70 Fortune 100 companies are represented in MPI. There are two Missouri MPI chapters, and 66 others in 20 countries around the world.
St. Louis Area Chapter (SLAMPI)
Chartered in 1979, the St. Louis Area Chapter of MPI has grown from 30 members to 260. SLAMPI serves eastern Missouri and southern Illinois. It has proven to be a shining star among MPI chapters, nationally garnering MPI Chapter of the Year recognition for three consecutive years – 2002-2003, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005.
SLAMPI’s main focus is education. Recently, its educational opportunities expanded beyond monthly meetings with the formation of the St. Louis Area Chapter of MPI U, a program for both members and non-members to hear nationally known speakers discuss key industry issues.

Kansas City Chapter (KCMPI)
Created in 1981, the Kansas City Area Chapter of MPI, which serves the greater Kansas City area including eastern Kansas and western Missouri, currently has more than 250 members. A majority of the members have been in the industry for more than 15 years. In addition, chapter members play a vital role in the Kansas City economy, producing an estimated $417 million in buying power for the meetings planned by its members.
Education is also important for KCMPI. Annually, the chapter offers a two-day spring education conference, which this year drew more than 200 attendees. KCMPI has also partnered with other area organizations to offer a broad range of educational seminars for its members.
