Missouri lawmakers advanced several tourism-related measures during the 2026 legislative session, including proposals tied to transient guest taxes and statewide tourism funding.

One of the key measures, HB 1867, would allow Joplin to increase its transient guest tax for tourism purposes to up to 6%, pending voter approval. The bill underwent several revisions in the Senate before lawmakers ultimately returned it to its original House-approved version focused solely on Joplin’s proposed tax increase.

Another closely watched proposal, SB 1646, sponsored by Sen. Mike Henderson, would have modified Branson’s tourism tax structure and changed how related revenue could be used. The bill was heard in the Senate Economic and Workforce Development Committee, where the Branson Hotel Lodging Association opposed the measure pending additional stakeholder discussions. The language was later added to HB 1867 in the Senate Local Government Committee before ultimately being removed prior to final passage. The Branson-related provisions did not pass.

Lawmakers also moved forward with legislation to reestablish Missouri’s Tourism Supplemental Revenue Fund. HB 1671 and SB 1000 would restore the fund, which previously sunset, allowing the state’s tourism division to carry over unused funding from one fiscal year to the next. Supporters say the measure would provide greater flexibility for tourism marketing and media buys.

The legislation drew support from several tourism and hospitality organizations across the state, including the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Humanities Council and Missouri RV Parks and Campgrounds. SB 1000 passed both chambers and now awaits action from Gov. Mike Kehoe.
