Letter from the Publisher

August 14, 2012

LetterFromPub1The 11th annual Missouri Meetings & Events Kansas City Regional Expo will take place September 17 and 18, 2012, at the Marriott Kansas City Downtown. Full details begin on page 18, including educational sessions and a list of speakers. Our Expo theme this year is “PLANit Tech-Know.” We’ll provide you with workshops and live demos of devices, applications and technologies that will make your job easier.

Make sure to bring your smartphone, laptop or tablet, and stop in and talk to one of our social media assistants. And best of all, the social media assistants are extremely knowledgeable and will provide free detailed advice to all attendees. This will get you real hands-on help to learn how your technology works. While attending the Expo, you will have opportunities to see more than one mobile application at work.

Do you need the basics in meeting planning? Then make sure you attend “Meeting & Event Planning 101” presented by Patti Gaughan, CMP on September 18 at 10:30 am. You will receive the most coveted tips from Patti and be able to ask her expert opinion about your most urgent questions. The MEET Business Exchange (MBE) on Monday evening (September 17) will be part of the Welcome Reception for all Expo attendees, which takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Please email [email protected] to sign up for one-on-one sessions with key suppliers during the MBE.

True or False? If the food item requires a carver or chef in attendance is it called a buffet? Now, if you don’t know the answer, please read Rob’s Rules on page 10 and email me the correct answer. The first correct reply I receive will get a full-page ad for a charity of the their choice in the winter issue of MM&E. Send to [email protected]

A warning to suppliers and event planners thinking that this year would be a great time to have an Olympic theme; DON’T, until you read the column by attorney Thomas Ishmael on page 28. Lawsuits brought against event companies for trademark infringement are increasingly common, said Ishmael. So you may want to rethink using the Olympic rings on your email blast or show program.

Enjoy the issue and reach your Olympic gold in producing better meetings!
