Letter From the Publisher

September 1, 2008

Are we in a depression, recession or business cycle downturn?  Is the slow economy hurting the meetings and events business?  The answer is yes and no and depends on whom you ask.  On a recent NPR (National Public Radio) segment they interviewed a Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, store manager who explained their business has increased because of the higher fuel prices. The store manager said his customers are reducing their 20-to-50-mile one-way trips to the big-box stores like Wal-Mart to save on fuel.  His customers are “buying local” which is a very “GREEN” thing to do and very good for business.

Being greener can save you money in any economy, so learn all the secrets from the experts by attending the 7th annual Kansas City Regional Expo this September 8-9 at the Sheraton Sports Complex (see PLAN it GREEN™, page 30).  The PLAN it GREEN™ Expo will feature some valuable seminars and resources that will stretch your budget. Just when you need a pick-me-up, it’s John O’Leary to the rescue.  You should attend John’s session at the PLAN it GREEN™ Expo to find out why he is the HIGHEST-rated speaker by planners and suppliers alike in more than 8 years of Expos.

You don’t need to be the Missouri Audubon Society to create a L.E.E.D. certified building (see story, page 54). But you may want to know what recycled newspapers can be turned into and how plastic milk cartons can be used at your next meeting.

You may be confused by the mixed reports you receive from the daily news stream about the economy.  So allow me to make two observations and suggest some actions you can take. First, productivity is at an all-time high in the U.S.A. which means we are producing much more output with less input. Finding ways to be more productive is very good for business and the environment and will result in an increase in business for many suppliers.  The article Saving Bundles With Software Bundles (page 18) will provide several ways you can be more productive.

Second, the subscription requests and requests for information from Missouri Meetings & Events are higher than ever.  In May 2008 we had more than 800,000 user sessions on the MM&E Web site and are on track to set another milestone by the end of this year.

Your actions in the next few months are key to your business’ having a flat year or one showing an increase. Be more productive by being greener and perhaps you will be part of the increase in business that is really going on in this economy.
