Overland Park CVB honored with top destination award

The Overland Park Convention and Visitors Bureau was named a 2007 Top Destination award winner by Facilities & Destinations magazine.

Winners are nominated and voted on by approximately 38,000 association and corporate meeting planners and executives. Nominations are based upon criteria such as attractiveness as a destination, professionalism of the CVB staff, the quality of the convention center, hotel accommodations, on-site management, special promotions and services and accessibility. All honorees will be announced in the spring 2007 edition of Facilities & Destinations.

The Overland Park Convention Center was also honored as a 2007 Prime Site by Facilities & Destinations magazine.

John Q. Hammons to Develop Luxurious Chateau on Lake of the Ozarks, Osage Beach, Mo.

John Q. Hammons has revealed his plans to develop a first-class, luxury property on a 30-acre waterfront location near the Grand Glaize Bridge at the popular Lake of the Ozarks in Osage Beach, Mo. Inspired by Mr. Hammons’ extensive study of chateaus and castles of the world, the 15-story, 320-room, European-style property will be called Chateau on Lake of the Ozarks, and will feature a spa and more than 100,000 square feet of meeting space. The hotel and exhibition center will be owned by Hammons and managed by Springfield, Missouri-based John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts, independent builder, developer, owner and manager of upscale, full-service hotels, resorts and suites.

Hammons’ 14th property in Missouri, Chateau on Lake of the Ozarks is slated to open in spring 2010 with construction expected to begin spring 2008. The property will be strategically located near the new interchange at U.S. Highway 54. The hotel will be well positioned along the Lake of the Ozarks’ 1,375 miles of scenic shoreline and offer panoramic views of the lake from three sides of the peninsula.

The luxurious, European-style Chateau will exude a chic ambience accented by a stylish, modern decor. Guests can relax at its full-service spa. The flexible meeting space will include a 40,000-square-foot grand ballroom and 22 smaller meeting spaces to accommodate gatherings of all sizes.


The World’s Largest TITANIC Museum Attraction in Branson, Missouri, has announced the addition of more than $1 million in new guest experiences for the 2007 season, along with a worldwide amateur ham radio broadcast to commemorate the 95th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic.

Beginning April 12, guests waiting to enter TITANIC can stroll through a scaled version of the London Waterloo Train Station, where many of Titanic’s most prominent passengers boarded for Southampton to reach the ship for its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. TITANIC crew members greet guests waiting at the ‘train station’ with information to help enrich the tour experience.

Beginning May 1, guests will have an opportunity to hear stories told by several of Titanic’s survivors in the all-new TITANIC Audio Tour. Individual cell-phone-sized listening devices will allow guests to play audio clips from Titanic’s actual survivors and hear descriptions of many of the 400 priceless artifacts by narrator Bernard Hill, the actor who played Captain Smith in director James Cameron’s Oscar-winning movie Titanic.

Hilton St. Louis Downtown Wins Top Honors

On the heels of the 79th Academy Awards, New Orleans rolled out the red carpet for the annual Hilton Hotels Conference. This event honored the top performers in the Hilton brand of hotels from six continents for 2006. The new kid on the block, Hilton St. Louis Downtown, managed to amass seven top honors including a Connie Award, named in honor of founder Conrad Hilton. This award goes to the property that has demonstrated the best overall guest satisfaction, experience and loyalty.

Seven awards is an unprecedented achievement in the history of the Hilton Awards Conference. Other awards included: Best Room Service, Best Guest Service, Most Helpful Front Desk, Problem Free Hotel, Diamond HHonors Guest Recognition Award and the All Green Zones Award.

Recently, the Hilton St. Louis Downtown’s General Manager, Doug Johaningmeyer, received the General Manager of the Year award presented at the annual Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) awards banquet, which recognizes the best players in the field of hospitality in St. Louis. The event featured a cocktail reception, facility tours and informal presentations by 9th District of Missouri Congressman Kenny Hulshof, BJC Health Care President Steve Lipstein, Progress West Health Care Center President John Antes, Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder, BJC Board Member Paul Mc Kee, and O’Fallon City Council President Peter Cantwell.

The event, which took place Thursday February 1, 2007 at the new Progress West Health Care Center at 2 Progress Point Parkway in O’Fallon, Missouri, was a great success with approximately 350 attendees. Among those in attendance were prominent physicians, surgeons and business individuals from the greater St. Louis and St. Charles area.

Verizon Wireless Amphitheater is the New Name in Live Entertainment in St. Louis

Verizon Wireless will become the new name-in-title sponsor of St. Louis’ premier outdoor concert venue in 2007 as part of a seven-year deal announced by Live Nation, the world’s largest producer, promoter and presenter of live entertainment. The current UMB Bank Pavilion in Maryland Heights will be renamed the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater St. Louis, and concertgoers will hear and see the difference.

Plans are already being made for the 21,000-seat venue that has hosted some of the biggest music acts in the world and millions of fans since 1991.  In an effort to improve the concert experience, Verizon Wireless plans to offer many exciting programs next summer, including an on-site Wireless Café in the North Plaza, Text2Win promotions and special fly away contests. Select Verizon Wireless customers will also get an opportunity to gain early entrance to the concerts and special preferred parking.

Mark Crumpton, the company’s president–Kansas/Missouri region, said it is currently working on plans to use its more than 25 retail stores in the area to promote the music venue and offer special incentives to customers. Concertgoers will also be able to use their wireless handsets to interact with the crowd during many upcoming events.


Upscale Hotel Chain’s Best Saluted during Annual Brand Conference

Embassy Suites Hotels recognized its top hotels during an awards ceremony at the brand’s annual General Manager and Directors of Sales conference, held in La Quinta, Calif., January 16 through18. More than 40 awards were presented to hotels chosen from the brand’s portfolio of more than 185 hotels throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and South America. Each honored hotel received a trophy, monetary prize and individual recognition during the conference.

The Connie Awards, named in honor of company founder Conrad Hilton, are awarded based on three key components: quality assurance audits measuring cleanliness, condition and brand standards; customer scores rating staff service; and customer service scores rating the quality of the hotel’s physical accommodations. The top three hotels to receive Connie Awards were:
