Juneteenth is the holiday commemorating a day in 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom. Missouri’s own Cape Girardeau brings that event into focus with their annual Juneteenth Celebration. Cape Girardeau’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, also known as VisitCape, organized a truly beautiful event at Ivers Square in the heart of Downtown Cape on Saturday, June 21st.

Beginning at 11am, the Juneteenth Celebration included musical entertainers, such as New Bethel Choir, Community Choir, and DJ Jerrk, as well as story tellers in traditional uniforms, raffles and games for children, food and beverage trucks, and local vendors. Carefully placed pictures of famous enslaved people with their stories were placed along the path of the Celebration, serving as a history lesson as well as a reminder of those enslaved individuals who Juneteenth is commemorating.
