Kansas City, MO Hotel Scheduled for Demolition

A once prominent, but now problematic Kansas City hotel property will be reduced to rubble when the city performs a demolition aimed at improving the surrounding neighborhood by removing blighted buildings.

Implosion of the old Park Place Hotel, 1601 N. Universal Ave., is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 24.

Because of the building’s proximity to Interstate 435, the Missouri Department of Transportation and Kansas City Police Department will reroute motorists on I-435 near Front Street for about an hour. Traffic will be shut down 30 minutes before implosion on southbound I-435 at Missouri Highway 210 and northbound I-435 at U.S. Highway 24. Front Street will remain open to traffic, but the ramp to northbound I-435 will be closed.

In preparation for the implosion, Kansas City-based Industrial Salvage & Wrecking will drill more than 2,200 holes into the old hotel. Then a Maryland firm specializing in implosions will detonate the charges, bringing both buildings in the hotel complex down simultaneously.

The blighted property has been an eyesore for more than a year. According to a release from the city, officials devoted considerable resources in an effort to remedy the situation before ultimately settling on implosion.

Long regarded as one of the area’s premier lodging properties, Park Place’s first tower was built in 1974, and a second tower was added in 1978. Its 328 rooms made Park Place one of the largest hotels in Kansas City, featuring a 9,500-square-foot ballroom, a man-made lake and a contemporary indoor/outdoor pool. However, when the property abruptly closed in 2016, it fell victim to vagrants, looters and frequent fires.
